Big Hole River Floodplain Mapping
Project Update:
Future West helped bring together state agencies, local landowners, four local governments, and the Big Hole Watershed Committee in this true collaborative effort. The Big Hole floodplain study not only provides more accurate and defensible information for Big Hole communities, but established new standards for Montana floodplain mapping. The methodology and data used in the Big Hole study was recognized on October 7, 2014 when DNRC signed the Final Order.
Goal:
To lead a collaborative process to produce accurate, defensible floodplain maps for 116 miles of the Big Hole River. The improved information provides support for wise floodplain decisions that protect property, human health and safety, and floodplain function and resiliency.
Objectives:
Produce and adopt approximate zone A floodplain maps at the county and state levels.
Support the process to update county floodplain regulations to reflect 1) new state model regulations and 2) Big Hole land use committee recommendations (No Adverse Impact).
Outcomes:
A river corridor that is managed to maintain its functions and adapt to climate change. A river corridor that sustains water quality and quantity, agriculture, fish and wildlife habitat, and the health and safety of property, residents, and visitors.
