The High Divide: A Survey of Community-Based Conservation-2013

Future West conducted a survey of several Montana and Idaho community-based conservation groups working to gain a better understanding of their on the ground success and challenges, to better inform efforts to build their capacity. The survey is a snapshot of the incredible amount of conservation and restoration work being accomplished in the High Divide. Click here for the downloadable PDF of the complete report.

Goal

The goal of the project is to increase the environmental, economic, and geographic impact of local conservation and restoration projects in the High Divide counties of Idaho and Montana. The inventory focused on conservation organizations working in the Idaho counties of Butte, Clark, Custer, Fremont Lemhi, Madison, and Teton counties, as well as the Montana counties of Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Jefferson, Madison, and Silver Bow.

Survey objectives include:

  • Identify conservation and restoration projects from 2008-2013.
  • Identify the:
    1. Conservation activities and goals
    2. Economic and environmental benefits
    3. Resources needed for success
  • Identify the actions and strategies needed to support similar projects.
  • Develop a capacity building and communications campaign to inform the public about these efforts.
  • Attract additional conservation investment to the region.
