Project Description

PARK AND BEAVERHEAD COUNTY ATLASES

Goal:

The information contained in these Atlases provide a foundation for developing improved land use plans, economic development strategies, and conservation initiatives. Incorporating natural resource, demographic, and socioeconomic data under one cover, these Atlases support informed decisions by elected officials and the community that reflect and conserve the natural and cultural resources of these two diverse counties. They were developed as a collaborative effort between Future West and the Planning Departments of Park and Beaverhead counties, both in Montana.

Objectives:

  • Provide the best available information on an array of natural, cultural and economic county resources in an attractive, accessible document.
  • Integrate this information into planning processes, as well as into school curriculum and public outreach.

Outcomes:

  • Comprehensive and illustrative hard copy versions of the two Atlases were produced and widely disseminated. In addition, GIS versions of related Atlas maps, charts etc. are now available for public use on the Planning Departments’ websites. This information has also been incorporated into county growth policy documents.

Partners:

The Park and Beaverhead County Planning Departments as well as the Commissioners from both counties were valued partners in this process. Other entities such as Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, Headwaters Economics, and Gage Cartographics also played important roles in their production.
